What is the rationale behind the arrangement of the 12 airbags in the Xiaomi Pengcheng N90 Max?

Official answer

The Xiaomi Pengcheng N90 Max is equipped with 12 airbags throughout the vehicle, covering from the first row all the way to the third row. For a three-row, large-space SUV, our key considerations in airbag design were: not only ensuring protection for every row, but also providing more comprehensive protection for different collision directions and occupant positions.

First, coverage across all three rows. In addition to the front airbags for the driver and front passenger, side airbags are installed on both the left and right sides of the first and second rows. Dual-chamber far-side airbags are also equipped for the first and second rows respectively, while the third row has left and right side airbags. Furthermore, extra-long side curtain airbags running through the first, second, and third rows on both sides ensure that occupants in all three rows receive corresponding airbag protection.

Second, during a side impact, we aim to protect not only the occupants on the impact side but also address their inward displacement within the cabin. Therefore, we have equipped dual-chamber, 4-point fixed far-side airbags in the first and second rows. The dual-chamber structure provides protection for the head and chest separately; the 4-point fixation ensures more stable positioning of the airbag after deployment, offering more precise restraint for occupants. Under specific collision conditions, head displacement after a side impact can be reduced by up to 24%.

Third, as seat positions change, the airbag protection range must keep pace. The Xiaomi Pengcheng N90 Max features extra-long seat rails, so we designed extra-long side curtain airbags with a length of 3030mm and a volume of 72L, one on each side, running from the first row through to the third row. Dual gas generators are used to ensure rapid inflation, maximizing coverage for occupants regardless of seat position.

Thus, these 12 airbags are not simply about pursuing quantity, but are designed around the goals of "full coverage across three rows, more comprehensive side-impact protection, and continued coverage even after seat movement," ensuring that occupants from the first to the third row receive more complete airbag protection.
