The coating, mainly composed of silicon carbide, helps maintain the uniformity of the friction surface and protects the internal matrix material of the disc. This coating naturally forms fine surface "crack" patterns after undergoing high temperatures during production. Verification has shown that coated carbon-ceramic discs perform better than uncoated ones, and this does not affect the strength or performance of the brake discs.
