Xiaomi YU7 uses 2200MPa Xiaomi Ultra-High-Strength Steel. Is higher body material strength always better?
The strength of body materials is indeed very important for overall vehicle safety, but passive safety is a systematic engineering project. Materials need to be selected specifically according to their application areas, balancing multiple performance factors such as strength, toughness, elongation, and resistance to brittle fracture.
For example, the A/B pillars and four-door anti-collision beams are core protective structures of the passenger compartment, requiring high strength to ensure that the passenger compartment remains as undeformed or minimally deformed as possible during a collision. Therefore, Xiaomi YU7 applies industry-leading 2200MPa Xiaomi Ultra-High-Strength Steel to the four-door anti-collision beams and the 'embedded roll cage' of the A/B pillars, providing better protection for occupants in scenarios such as side impacts and rollovers.
In addition to high-strength materials, the body also has crumple zones that require relatively lower strength materials. For instance, the energy-absorbing box of the anti-collision beam needs to absorb collision energy through compression deformation to reduce the impact on the passenger compartment. Therefore, the energy-absorbing box is made of aluminum and features guide grooves to facilitate crumpling and energy absorption.
Xiaomi YU7 invests heavily in body materials, resulting in a high-strength steel and aluminum alloy ratio of 90.2% in its Armor Steel-Aluminum Hybrid Body. Beyond body materials, in terms of overall passive safety, Xiaomi YU7 has completed over 50 passive safety performance development tests, covering all C-NCAP and C-IASI crash test standards.
