Long-term Episode 157 · Question 1

The Xiaomi YU7 is equipped with 245/55R19 tires. What do 245 and 55 represent respectively? Why wasn't a 255-width tire chosen?

Official answer

'245mm' represents the section width of the tire, which is the straight-line distance between the two sidewalls at their widest point. '55' is a percentage number representing the height of the tire sidewall as a percentage of the tire's section width. A higher aspect ratio means the tire looks 'thicker', has stronger resistance to road impacts, can better protect the wheel rim, and implies better comfort and buffering capability. In addition, the 245mm tire width enhances the range of the Xiaomi YU7, helping the standard version achieve a maximum range of 835km under CLTC conditions, comprehensively balancing comfort and range performance.

The combination of '245/55' width and aspect ratio is common in models that focus on comfort and driving texture while also considering certain driving dynamics. Compared to the wider '255/50' tire model, although some handling performance is sacrificed, it brings better comfort and range performance. In terms of safety and stability, Xiaomi YU7 has customized tuning for all tire models, combined with the chassis system ESP (Electronic Stability Program) body stability control and quadruple braking redundancy, ensuring braking and driving safety. Therefore, vehicle driving stability depends not only on the width of the tires but on systematic tuning and matching.

However, if you wish to obtain better tire handling performance, the rear tires of the Xiaomi YU7 support a maximum size selection of 275/40 R21, achieving a narrow front and wide rear tire configuration for better handling performance. At the same time, the Xiaomi YU7 offers many rich tire and wheel options to meet comprehensive needs for range, comfort, silence, and sports performance, which we will introduce in detail later.
